Happy International Day of the Girl Child!

Last year the United Nations declared October 11th the International Day of the Girl Child. Today marks the first International Day of the Girl Child,  the theme for this year is Ending Child Marriage. Let's continue to remember the unique challenges girls face around the world and celebrate achievements made in girls' rights.

Skateistan, “a kabul-based non-governmental organization," uses skateboarding and education to empower girls in Afghanistan, Cambodia and Pakistan.  Forty percent of the students benefiting from Skateistan are girls age 5-18.

Check out these girls in action!

Joy Bryant, Model & Actress Turned Snowboarder Chick

Source: NY Daily News,2011
You might remember Joy Bryant from the movies Antwone Fisher and  Get Rich or Die Tryin. Well this Bronx native is not only gracing the catwalk and movie screens but also getting her "shred on." Joy is now a contributor for Burton Women's lifestyle blog and a mentor for the Stoked Mentoring Program, which reaches out to inner city youth through action sports. Stoked teaches urban youth necessary skills for life, "goal-setting, overcoming obstacles, trust, communication, and respect," through snowboarding, skateboarding and surfing.

Watch Joy talks about her experience as a Stoked mentor.

Though featured on the NBC sitcom "Parenthood," Joy finds time to  hit the slopes and advance her snowboarding skills. This season she hopes to do more tree runs and have more patience.

Check out Joy on Burton Women.

Kudos to Joy Bryant, being a model and actress did not stop her from pursing snowboarding. So what is holding you back from your board dreams? NOTHING!

Hola Fellow Skater Chicas,

MTV is casting for a new reality show,"Skater Girls," a spin off of their "Surf Girls" reality show from back in '03 (wow, back then I was banned from watching MTV...haha). The producers, working in collaboration with the All Girls Skate Jam and Pacsun are in search of three girlfriends who like skateboarding. If  interested, you don't have to be a professional skater, but be able to ride a skateboard. Visit The All Girls Skate Jam to find out more about the program and how to submit your video. Wip out your flip or camcorder and get to taping.

Female Boarder On Cover of LIFE, 1965

LIFE has recently been going through their archives and  highlighting events of cultural importance from past decades. In the 1960's , LIFE reported on the "craze and menace of skateboards" to contemporary America. The fact that LIFE chose to spotlight skateboarding as one these cultural elements along with other key moments (i.e, civil rights, the Kennedy years) demonstrates it's impact on our society. Surprisingly, female surfer and skateboarder pioneer Pat McGee was featured on the cover of the May 14,1965 issue. The almost half-century old issue also features McGee skating barefoot at the 1965 National Skateboarding Championships. In 2010, Pat was the first female inducted into the Skateboarding Hall of Fame. Seeing McGee featured on the cover of this issue is a  remarkable reminder of the importance of women to skateboarding. Though, female athletes in skateboarding and other sports still lack equal rights, it is evident that their roots are so deep in the sport it can never be replaced.
