Jazmyn Glause reps Duluth, MN. At the age of 12, Jazmyn's journey with skateboarding began when her parents bought her Tony Hawk Underground 2. She thought it was so "rad that there was a girl skater in it, it was Elissa Steamer. I wanted to be just like her!" Since that moment, Jazmyn rolled around on her skateboard everyday. Soon her level of comfortability increased and started learning tricks.

Now 15, she is sponsored by Starz Skateboarding Co. and Rockstar BearingsJazmyn believes that  "trying your best to accomplish whatever you want to accomplish in life, if you can do that, no one can stop you."  This zealousness shines through her agility in simultaneously ollieing down sets of stairs, nollie tre-flipping and executing challenging assortments of tricks, while still holding her unique easy-going swagger.

Jazmyn in Action!

Jazmyn loves the thrill skateboarding produces in helping to face one's fears and the feeling accomplishment from learning and perfecting new tricks. She also notes that "you can never really 'win' at skating, there's always something new to work for." Though the only skater chick in her community, she thinks it would be "awesome to have girls to skate with, and someone that shares the same love for it as I do." She advises that girls who are interested in skateboarding should, "Just go for it! It’ll be scary at first, and you’ll worry about getting hurt, but once you get into it, you’ll be glad you did. It’s challenging, but SO fun." When Jazmyn is not skateboarding she participates other intense sports like Roller Derby.

It's great to see the "mid-late 90's babies" like Jazmyn, Samarria Brevard, Christiana Smith and Beatrice Domond stepping up  and continuing the shredding tradition more and more. I can't wait to see these girls skating at the X-Games in coming years. Much KUDOS to all of you, especially Ms. Jazmyn Glause (cool last name). Girls are here to stay in SK8ING!

Happy International Women's Day

Hello Black Skater Chick Fam. This is one of the best months of the year, Women's History Month. Celebrating the sacrifices, contributions and achievements of women all over the world. Lets take time to celebrate women with the rest of the globe.

International Women's Day,2012

Today is International Women's Day !!!

The theme this year via the International Women's Day organization is "Connecting Girls, Inspiring Futures". As a young girl, I was inspired by the women of the American Suffragists Movement who fought for equal voting rights to Vonetta Flowers,  the first female Winter Olympics gold medalist of African descent and Kelly Clark, the first women to land a 1080 in winter X-Games history.  We have all been inspired by women from all walks of life and they gave us courage to pursue our dreams in challenging gender inequalities. Organizations such as, The Alliance and Girls Skate Network are working to connect girls in the action sports community and provide more opportunities for them in the industry. So,how will you reflect the theme of International Women's Day in your activities not only today but throughout the year? How will you inspire the girls of this generation in your community?

In the words of Sojourner Truth, "Ain't I A Woman To?" (you should read the whole speech). Are we not the daughters of individuals who changed the world of science, education, medicine and  sports ? Let's continue to grow in our connections and motivate young girls, only in collective actions can we stop injustice.

Joy Bryant, Model & Actress Turned Snowboarder Chick

Source: NY Daily News,2011
You might remember Joy Bryant from the movies Antwone Fisher and  Get Rich or Die Tryin. Well this Bronx native is not only gracing the catwalk and movie screens but also getting her "shred on." Joy is now a contributor for Burton Women's lifestyle blog and a mentor for the Stoked Mentoring Program, which reaches out to inner city youth through action sports. Stoked teaches urban youth necessary skills for life, "goal-setting, overcoming obstacles, trust, communication, and respect," through snowboarding, skateboarding and surfing.

Watch Joy talks about her experience as a Stoked mentor.

Though featured on the NBC sitcom "Parenthood," Joy finds time to  hit the slopes and advance her snowboarding skills. This season she hopes to do more tree runs and have more patience.

Check out Joy on Burton Women.

Kudos to Joy Bryant, being a model and actress did not stop her from pursing snowboarding. So what is holding you back from your board dreams? NOTHING!

Say What? Another BLACK SKATER CHICK...Christiana Smith

Source: Girls Riders Association,2012

You're sadly mistaken if you thought there was just one BLACK SKATER CHICK cruising around. Another young lady, Christiana Smith, has been competing in the ranks of Samarria Brevard and is now skating for another popular girl skater team, the Girl Riders Organization (GRO). Christiana, a 15-year old native to Southfield, Michigan has been skating for almost five years now. Her advice to other girls who want to skate is to "...just do it. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t just because you’re a girl. Even if you’re not good at first just keep trying and practicing and HAVE FUN!Well Spoken. Christina surely sounds like she's got a good head on her shoulders and let's not forget a  full package of wicked board skills.
