Today marks the beginning of the London 2012 Paralympics Games. The summer games includes a wide range of sports ranging from traditional track and field events to wheelchair fencing. In light of this, last week Shadow and Act, introduced a new project documenting a "skateboard-inspired version of soccer" originating in Ghana for individuals with polio. In this ingenious sport coined, Rollaball, players are strapped to locally made skateboards which assistant in maneuvering across the concrete while their arms and hands move furiously to "hand-kicking" or "hand-pass" the ball. The film features the life of the Rolling Rockets team. For players, Rollaball is just another insouciant pastime, but a mechanism for rising out of poverty. Hopefully, Rollaball will become a Paralympic sport in the future.
